While one of the endearing liberal attributes of European style socialism is the acceptance of all cultures into society, the German Chancellor declares that this approach has "ulterly failed".
Your comments on labor unions and the post office is right on. There is no reason mail cannot be dropped down to 3 or 4 days a week, the cost to mail something, such as a letter should be raised to be competitive to UPS and FED EX. I love using priority mail because I mail from the Arizona to MA and NH a lot and it is expensive through UPS and FED EX. I do not think getting rid of the USPS is the right answer because the less services offered the higher UPS and FED EX will raise their rates. If those are your only options for mailing packages you will have to pay their rates and they will raise them. Most people realize if there is only one or a couple of options available those business are in the business of making money, as much as they can and will raise their prices without other options to people. As far as labor unions they are a joke. Long ago they served their purpose but no longer. They help people who should not have a job hold onto a job that in the normal sector would have been fired. Speaking from experience, (and not proud f it) when I was very young working for Western Electric they had a union, I was a terrible employee, yes I said it, I should have been fired, but was able to keep my job taking advantage of the system of the union steps before a company can fire someone. Eventually, I did get fired but that took them over a year. OK, I was young and stupid, didn't have to work so didn't know the value of a good job. Older, much older now, and a manager who hires and fires I will not even work for a company that has a union because I know that I will be working with some of the laziest people who use the system the unions have in place to hold onto their jobs when they do not deserve them. I was only one among many who did the same thing. I learned how to use the system, from the union representatives. There was a need for them at one time but not any more. Get rid of the unions, cut the post office work week, lower the workers pay to reflect the reductions in hours but not so they can't live. Postal workers make a good pay but it should be in line to what business not funded by the government get paid and raise the rates to mail a letter to still be cheaper than UPS or FED EX but comparable so instead of charging $1.50 charge .75 or $1.00. People will still use the USPS because they are cheaper. For those of you who say no one uses the USPS to pay bills, not everyone in this day and age has a computer. Yes, that is how I pay my bills also, but I still know many people that don't use a computer because they can't afford to buy one.

John, I am a Republican with friends that regard me as a liberal. The stuff I get on the net from them and the fact they are so angry and have no problem in quoting Palin, guns and ballots etc is far worse than anything I have seen from the left.
John, I love your comments about things made oversees causing delays and resulting in bad quality. I am attending collegenow for CNC manufacturing technology, and actually have one class that is all about lean Mfg. and the reprocussions of a global manufacturing community, and all the quality issues and time/deadline issues caused by sending stuff around the world to get made by cheap labor. Americans want cheap, and cheap is what they got. But, now we are seeing that cheap stuff is a waste of resources, money, fills our landfills HERE up with Chinese crap. I collect mid century antiques, and own many items from the 1940's and 50's and without exception, EVERYTHING I have makes me damn proud of the good Old USA. For example, I have a late 1960's Avocodo green Sears blender that my wife uses constantly, ( she loves to cook) My Mom owned this when i was just a few years old, ( I am 44 now). It is finally starting to act up, most likely due to wires/buttons getting moist and wet for 40+ years. It still works well though. We recieved a modern blender as a wedding gift 6 years ago, I think it was a Black & Decker, or Oster, I forget. Anywho, it lasted less than a year. The motor went on it. My wife uses it no differently than the Sears. I just bought another vintage Sears blender off of Ebay for $20. It looks in mint condition. I am sure this will most likely last the rest of our lives. Would I pay more for products like this today??? You had better believe it. The problem is evident by comments from other posters....." Why should I pay more for soemthing made in America, if I can buy something similar for 1/3 the price?" This is the mentality. And until good quality products (like those of yesteryear) are avaialable to us, and consumers have confidence in the quality, I would like to believe that we will all pay more for an American made product that is superior to competition in quality....all day long.
I hope and pray for this day to come.
john-they all where in it, they all lied to us. it's all bull.
